Fashion Persona Brief
Emily Hernandez
Emily Hernandez is a 22 year old female who has just recently graduated college and has moved to Minneapolis following graduation to pursue a career in psychology further. She’s taken up a job at a clinic as a research assistant for 22$ an hour (Indeed, 2025) where she will be assisting psychology professionals in order to help herself learn from them more. She is a very empathetic individual and loves being able to help people as much as they can, and she hopes that she is able to use her degree in order to help people out as much as she can.
Due to an accident which she had when she was younger, she has burn scars on her shoulders and a slight one across her left arm, which she covers up with her clothing. However, this makes her attempts at shopping for new clothes rough for her, as attributes in upper boy clothing design such as tags or bulky seams irritate her scars which makes them absolutely unbearable to wear in any way. She can’t often go out and buy clothes regularly and has to spend hours online looking around for clothes with flat seams and flat tags as well as to not have her scars irritated by usual clothing. When dressing up for events, she often has to rely on dresses which do not cover her scars, however she usually has to go through afterwards and cut bits of fabric off in order to ensure that wearing such is comfortable. Her style tends to be really loose when it comes to what she wears
Emily herself is very careful when it comes to ensuring that everything goes right to ensure her comfort, in her eyes, if she is comfortable then she can help other people out more effectively. On her way to work in the morning, she stops by her local coffee place to help get her through the day, after receiving it she moves it into a canteen of hers to ensure that she doesn’t end up spilling it on herself when she is walking to her job. She chooses not to drive and prefers to use a bicycle for longer distances due to feeling of the car seat often annoying her scars as a result. On her way back home from work, she will often stop by a local thrift shop to see if she can find any donated clothes which fit her specifications. Due to recently having graduated college, Emily has been a little more expensive when it comes to the money she has spent as a result. She has gone clothing shopping at least 2-3 times a week, however it is incredibly rare for her to find something to the specifications she requires. In the chance she finds something that is close she will have to go back home and edit it using a kit which she had bought in order to make the small necessary changes.
Emily hates several different popular materials which scratch against her body, these include different fabrics such as wool, polyester, nylon, and spandex which all have different attributes which lead to them feeling itchy and irritant against her skin as a result. She will absolutely not buy any clothing which consists of any of the above materials and when gift shopping, her family will not spend any of their money buying her items which contain any of the few materials. She will also refuse to buy anything which is tight against her skin as well, her family will not do the same for her either as a result. Lastly, Emily will never buy something which is oversized for herself, as the clothing constantly moving against her scars irritates them too much to be worth wearing in her day to day when she has free time.
Emily Hernandez is an excellent example for my group when it comes to recognizing the issue behind sensory clothing and the amount of money that could be lost as a result. Emily and her family are a key example of a group of people who would not buy clothing which contains some of the qualities like irritant fabrics, tags around the neck, or thick seams which will do damage to her scars. This is a large part of the market which they are not buying which causes money to be lost as a result. This is also a big portion of time in life where spending money on clothes would become more common from them due to just leaving college and feeling more free to buy clothes that way.
The problems she has with her clothing could be improved upon during the process of their creation which would save her from having to fix them herself. Tags could be built within the cloth in order to allow for her to access the sizes easier but also not irritate her scars as a result of such. The stitching done connecting sleeves and collars can also be flatter as well which means it wouldn't cause any bad interaction with her scars as a result of such a decision. Fabrics chosen should be soft to ensure that they don't scratch the skin as well, such fabrics like wool or polyester should not be used for such a thing (Palfrey, 2025).
The below collection of images is what I feel Emily would look like, a younger lady with burn scars across her which makes clothing like this, especially on business occasions, a requirement.
